Frankfurt Airport saw its cargo volumes increase in March despite the impact of the US-Iran conflict, while the airport also noted the use of preighters to move cargo out of the Middle East region.
Europe’s largest cargo hub registered a 0.4% increase in cargo volumes in March to 185,500 tonnes, despite the overall air cargo market declining by 3-4% as a result of the conflict, according to data providers WorldACD and Xeneta.
Airport operator Fraport said that freight capacity on flights to the Middle East declined by 51.5%. Once operations were able to restart, an extra 50 “preighter” flights – where passenger aircraft are used solely to carry cargo – were deployed, mainly on Dubai routes.
